Social Media and Foundations

Posted by: Debra Askanase In: fundraising|social media strategy

Many foundations and philanthropies are using social media to talk to their stakeholders. If you are a nonprofit seeking foundation funding, make connecting with foundations using social media part of your overall development plan – and your engagement strategy.

Nonprofit organizations constantly need to raise funds, and many are turning to social media to raise funds online. Organizations ask, “when does social media lead to more money?” The real question to think about is, “when does engagement lead to more money.” Using social media to engage, listen and learn from stakeholders is the first requirement for a successful online fundraising strategy.

Facebook Causes is one of those conundrums in the nonprofit world – it seems like a perfectly wonderful tool for gaining attention for a cause, but there are significant barriers to adopting Causes as an online giving mechanism. The biggest barrier is cultural: people are used to socializing on social networking sites, not giving. But they will…it’s just a matter of time. This post explores the barriers to online social giving.

This 2009 NTEN conference session covered basic issues that nonprofits have telling their stories through a campaign. The post features the case example of Jewish Voice for Peace that turned around its approach to telling stories, using social media, and developing fundraising campaigns.

Charity: water has sent out an interactive thank-you to all its Twestival donors. In doing so, it has used all the best lessons from a recent Community Philanthropy 2.0 study and applied it to its own donor base. Donors want to be involved, learn about the impact of their donations and hear about success stores. Charity: water has done all that and more…convinced me to give again.
