<p><em>Note from Debra: Susan Perri (<a href="http://twitter.com/wingrants" target="_blank">@wingrants</a>) tweeted to me a few weeks ago that she was seeing a rise in self-promotional tweets on Twitter, and a lack of courtesy. I asked her to expand on what she was seeing, and what advice she might offer to those new to Twitter. Her advice may well make sense for all, whether you are new to Twitter, not yet using Twitter, or an old hand at Twitter. Twitter requires a two-way relationship to create engagement. In that spirit, Susan offers three basic Twitter etiquette tips.  What follows is Susan&#8217;s guest post:</em></p>
<p>Our social media experiences often boils down to one question: Do you want engagement? On Twitter, it’s going to require a two-way relationship, with communication that addresses questions and comments from your followers.</p>
<p>I should begin by acknowledging I do see lots of great folks sharing the compelling stories of their work, which is often interesting and sometimes even noble. I’m glad to hear those stories, and connect and engage. At its best, I believe this is what social media should be, and certainly these are my intentions for using my selected platforms and Twitter in particular. Lately though I’ve been noticing the sheer volume of self-promotion combined with a general lack of common courtesy I encounter on Twitter. Like any other social or community venue, not all folks have the same idea, which can lower the quality of the user experience for the rest of us. Just because you can self-promote on Twitter does not mean you should do solely that. While there are many ways to engage with others, some etiquette should apply. Fundraising blog Fundly and my fellow Twitterer Dave Boyce (<a href="http://twitter.com/davidjboyce1" target="_blank">@davidjboyce1</a>) speaks about this issue via a great post titled “<a href="http://blog.fundly.com/2011/10/07/spread-the-love-with-social-media-but-don%E2%80%99t-forget-to-mind-your-manners/" target="_blank">Spread the love with social media, but don’t forget to mind your manners</a>.” In the post, Dave references the work of Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. According to Carnegie, the best leaders improve relationships with every word and action on a daily basis, and this kindness is contagious.</p>
<p>Let’s have some more kindness, please! Our increasingly digital age need not corrode the basic tenets of social niceties. Perhaps I’m hopelessly old-fashioned, but here are the values I (still) believe in, and would urge us all to follow while making our way around the Twittersphere:</p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>1. Walk Your Talk</strong></span></p>
<p>I’m looking for the kinds of leaders on Twitter that Dale Carnegie wrote about, especially as they relate to my work.  In my particular line of work, I see a lot of Twitter users who promote themselves as nonprofit, communications and/or fundraising professionals. Some of them use self-aggrandizing synonyms for professional, like maven or guru or genius. Many with really large followings put themselves out there as specialists on engagement – donor engagement, social media engagement, building relationships and communities. Surprisingly, these folks have been the most challenging to connect with or get some return engagement back from. Here’s an example to the contrary. Social media whiz (my label, not his) Robert Caruso (<a href="http://twitter.com/fondalo" target="_blank">@fondalo</a>) really practices what he preaches. This guy has almost 24,000 followers, and he still finds it in his heart to respond to and acknowledge promptly each and every mention, DM, and personal shout out on Twitter. <p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>2. Remember Your Manners</strong></span></p>
<p>Think about what your mother taught you. There are really basic, simple acts of kindness that don’t require anything of you but carry tremendous social return on investment. When someone follows you, give thanks. A simple “thank you” goes a long way. Consider following back if that user fits your criteria for doing so. When someone mentions you or references your work, acknowledge it. It’s the right thing to do, and it may just inspire them to do so again in the future.  Don’t be afraid to mention back. It generates goodwill. Irene Koehler (<a href="http://twitter.com/IreneKoehler" target="_blank">@IreneKoehler</a>) has a great post about Twitter fails of this ilk titled “<a href="http://www.almostsavvy.com/2009/07/11/11-sure-fire-ways-to-get-me-to-unfollow-you-on-twitter/" target="_blank">11 Sure-Fire Ways to Get Me to Unfollow You on Twitter</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>3. Don&#8217;t Be Too Full of Yourself</strong></p>
<p>Fellow tweep Matthew Smith (<a href="http://twitter.com/matthewsmith" target="_blank">@MatthewSm1th</a>), well versed in social media and philanthropy, <a href="http://matthewsm1th.com/2011/11/08/sharing-information-or-shameless-self-promotion/" target="_blank">recently wrote</a> about the difference between sharing information and “shameless self-promotion” via social media outlets. Self-promotion may be the most common reason for using social media, but I submit there is a balance between self-promotion and respectable engagement that need not be shameless. Let’s begin by the way we put ourselves  out there. Another Twitter connection, Ephraim Gopin (<a href="http://twitter.com/fundraisinisfun" target="_blank">@fundraisinisfun</a>), very smart about all things fundraising, <a href="http://www.fundraisinisfun.com/and-you-are-not-a-social-media-authority/" target="_blank">recently ranted</a> about the overuse of the self-administered “social media expert” label. Remember what I said earlier about “geniuses” and “gurus”? This practice of self-proclaimed mastery is indeed overdone, whatever the profession or service. For example, it’s enough call oneself savvy – you need not have a qualifier like “incredibly” or “super” or “amazingly” before it. Sometimes less really is more.</p>
<p>In this era where we are constantly creating new tools to connect, social media is an emerging and evolving platform for communication. Granted, we are learning as we go. We are increasingly interested with how we measure up, how many followers we can count, how much Klout we have. In the end, I think the old adage holds true – it’s quality, not quantity, and the same rules from your childhood playground still apply. Make friends, be nice, take turns, say please and thank you. Oh, yes, and have fun while you’re at it.</p>

<p>In the digital age, no one is interested in <em><strong>only your</strong></em> services and products. We&#8217;ve grown up in a competitive world. But now it&#8217;s a cooperative world: <a id="aptureLink_bucXfZ5rvh" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coopetition">coopetition</a> is becoming the means to success.  We are no longer isolated geographically, culturally, or demographically. Nonprofits may serve local clientele, but their online presence is global. I know that it&#8217;s counter-intuitive to recommend your competitors. But in the Web 2.0 world, it&#8217;s exactly what the culture demands. I contend that nonprofits must, and should, be ready to retweet, repost, and support competitors online.  Why?</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Collaboration doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re fighting over scarcity of resources. It means you&#8217;re making the resource pie bigger.<br />
</strong></span></p>
</blockquote>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="color: #000000;">I&#8217;ll go ahead and write the objection that I hear you saying out loud, right now</span></span>: We&#8217;re all competing for limited pools of resources.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="color: #000000;">Answer</span></span>: That&#8217;s been true for a long time, and it will always be the case. However, through collaborative efforts, you have the potential to bring in even more traffic, clients, and funding sources.</p>
<p>Joe Waters, of <a id="aptureLink_ZGA42b5u3x" href="http://selfishgiving.com/">Six Figure Cause Marketing</a>, says that he is trying to convince nonprofits to collaborate with cause marketing. He tells me via twitter: &#8220;Trying to do that w/cause marketing. Working w/other npos for mutual benefit. 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing.&#8221; <strong>Right on.</strong></p>
<p>Two great examples:</p>
<p><a id="aptureLink_8is17lvNO1" href="http://johnhaydon.com/about/">John Haydon</a>, a social media consultant, works with nonprofits to help them get more customers, build communities, and increase awareness. Not only that, but he sends out an auto-DM to his twitter followers recommending other consultants. He&#8217;s even recommended me, and I&#8217;m in the same consulting space as him.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.communityorganizer20.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/John-Haydon-autofollow-DM.png"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2266" title="John Haydon autofollow DM" src="http://www.communityorganizer20.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/John-Haydon-autofollow-DM.png" alt="" width="778" height="96" /></a></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the beauty of what John Haydon has done &#8211; he&#8217;s expanded the pie, not cut it into smaller pieces. Every one of the consultants he recommends can potentially collaborate with him on a project, refer projects to him. etc. I&#8217;m sure he&#8217;s also gotten leads and traffic from those he&#8217;s recommended as well. Can your nonprofit create an auto-DM recommending other great local nonprofits to follow?</p>
<p>28 Days, 28 Ideas is an effort of <a href="http://31days.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">31 Days, 31 Ideas</a>, <a href="http://ejewishphilanthropy.com/" target="_blank">eJewish Philanthropy</a>, the <a href="http://blogs.jta.org/philanthropy" target="_blank">JTA</a>, <a href="http://jewcy.com" target="_blank">Jewcy</a>, <a href="http://jewschool.com/" target="_blank">Jewschool</a>, <a href="http://blogs.forward.com/sisterhood-blog/" target="_blank">Sisterhood@the Forward</a> and the <a href="http://www.jewishfederations.org/index.aspx?page=1" target="_blank">Jewish Federations of North America</a>. They have banded together this February to create a platform to share one great idea a day for helping the Jewish world. 28 Days, 28 Ideas is also intended to expose media outlets to each others&#8217; readership.  Each organization is posting its ideas, and contributing to the 28 Days, 28 Ideas blog (which the twitter stream promotes). By doing so, they are reaching new audiences, and gathering ideas that could benefit everyone. The participatory organizations are actually making a new pie &#8211; Jewish social ventures &#8211; that they are now associated with creating!</p>
<p>An award-winning offline example:</p>
<p><a title="EmployAlliance" href="http://www.employalliance.com/" target="_blank">EmployAlliance </a>is a collaborative project that won the US Secretary of Labor&#8217;s 5th Anniversary New Freedom Initiative Award. It is a collaboration among six nonprofits that find employment leads for their disabled clients. As Dave Stevens, a career counselor at <a title="Chicago Lighthouse" href="http://chicagolighthouse.org/" target="_blank">the Chicago Lighthouse</a> mentions, &#8220;I now work with people who are blind, so when I get a job requiring sight, instead of letting it go fallow, I pass it along to other local agencies for people with disabilities via EmployAlliance, which in Chicago is under the Chamber of Commerce.&#8221;</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure each of these organizations demonstrates success through the number of clients successfully placed. They probably also compete for similar funds. However, together, they are a stronger recruiting team than apart. Make the pie as big as it can get!</p>
<p><em>R</em><em>emember that social media is about sharing and giving</em>. Mention great blog posts that your competitors write on your nonprofit&#8217;s blog. Share good posts to your nonprofit&#8217;s Facebook Page. Tweet about the great work other nonprofits in your town are doing. Support each other&#8217;s Linkedin groups.</p>

How does a weak tie become stronger, more fully engaged? It's when conversations move them from the public conversation places to private conversations. These private conversations are social media's "back yard." <p>Social media is a public platform. More specifically, all of your Facebook updates, Twitter updates, Flickr photo tags, Slideshare comments, blog comments, and just about any other social media commentary can be found using Google or other search engines. And as of last week, Google now indexes much of our conversation nearly in real time.  I think of these public conversations as social media&#8217;s virtual &#8220;front yard.&#8221;  (Hat tip to Hildy Gottlieb for beautifully expressing this idea in <a id="aptureLink_UmGq1HTvQY" href="http://hildygottlieb.com/2009/11/30/transparency-community-engagement-part-1/">her blog post</a>.)</p>

<p>Where are the back yards? These are the private spaces where conversations continue, out of the public eye. Some examples: In Facebook, it&#8217;s the inbox.  On Twitter, it&#8217;s the Direct Message (DM). On Linkedin, it&#8217;s &#8220;reply privately&#8221; to a group discussion. On Friendfeed, it&#8217;s the private conversation. On blogs, it&#8217;s when the blog owner writes back to the the commenter via email.</p>
<p><strong>Getting invited into the back yard is kind of a big deal, and that should also be a goal if you want to deepen engagement with some of your ties. </strong>It&#8217;s both a leap of faith and an extension of trust. The back yard invitation moves a very weak personal tie &#8211; someone you&#8217;ve just met online but never in person &#8211; to become a stronger personal tie.Over time, I&#8217;ve experienced this general progression from the front yard, to the back yard, to inside the kitchen.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve diagrammed the &#8220;strength progression of social media ties&#8221; below &#8211; and I would also love your thoughts about this diagram:</p>

<p>After talking via Skype, or VOIP, or in person, what&#8217;s next? Besides creating personal friendships, we may also be able utilize a person&#8217;s &#8220;whuffle&#8221; (social influence, as coined by Tara Hunt) if need be, on behalf of our causes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s worth repeating that social media builds relationships, and that relationships build brands and organizations. (Which is why we talk about how the <a id="aptureLink_cQQibWG97h" href="../2009/10/23/the-case-of-the-4000-twitter-followers-who-dont-care/">number of followers doesn&#8217;t matter</a>, but <a id="aptureLink_s1OFWtc82N" href="../2009/08/31/should-dunbars-number-affect-your-organizations-approach-online/">Dunbar&#8217;s number does</a>.)  A related post on this subject is Beth Kanter&#8217;s <a id="aptureLink_efW8ttfGBZ" href="http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2009/12/measure-the-impact-not-the-influence.html">post</a> on measuring impact, not influence and social influence reach versus affinity. Backyard conversations build relationships. After all, the best ideas do happen over a good meal and (sometimes) a few beers out on the back deck.</p>

<p>This week is the wonderful <a id="aptureLink_84hwafj3tX" href="http://www.tweetsgiving.org/">Tweetsgiving event</a>. I love that it gives me an opportunity to express my gratitude and also benefit a great <a id="aptureLink_hRh7LhnY5i" href="http://www.epicchange.org/">organization</a> and <a id="aptureLink_pOqlrI67HN" href="http://tweetsgiving.epicchange.org/story/">cause</a>.  As I pondered exactly how I would express gratitude, I began to think about how I would do it in the context of a social media conversation. The beauty of social media is that expressions of  thanks and appreciation are built right into the medium.</p>

<p>Retweet someone&#8217;s comment: Sometimes I retweet people I follow because it&#8217;s great info for my network. Sometimes I retweet people because I feel like I haven&#8217;t recognized their general contribution to my twitterverse in a while &#8211; and it&#8217;s good information. A retweet is recognition of someone&#8217;s value to you. That&#8217;s a form of thanks.</p>
<p>Tweet someone&#8217;s article/blog post/informative essay: they&#8217;ve said something really interesting and you&#8217;re recognizing it publicly.</p>
<p>Add a person to your Twitter List: I&#8217;m so incredibly honored that some people have put me on their list, and made that list public. If you have created groups using TweetDeck, or CoTweet, or another Twitter client, why not make those groups public now through your lists? Let everyone else know how awesome these Twitterers are.</p>
<p>Public recognition via #FollowFriday: The #FollowFriday (or #ff) participation is declining, and I think it&#8217;s a result of both fatigue and the rise of Twitter lists. However, the #ff recommendations I&#8217;ve received have warmed my heart tremendously and I am extremely grateful for them.</p>
<p>Give a shout out: Why not just tell someone how grateful you are to know them or what you learn from them? Here&#8217;s a tweet I sent out 6 days ago.</p>

<p>If you like a story, &#8220;stumble&#8221; it! As a blogger, it&#8217;s an incredibly wonderful thing to have one of my stories &#8220;stumbled.&#8221; It sends a lot of new folks to my site, and more than anything else, I know stumbling is not a task undertaken lightly. Stumbling a story means it is really, truly worthwhile. I am so appreciative of every stumbler. Do the same for someone else and show your gratitude for a great piece of information.</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Linkedin</strong></span></p>
<p>The very best way to express gratitude on Linkedin? Recommend someone. It takes less than five minutes and adds weight and credibility to their profile. If a connection performs a great service for you (your mechanic, your advisor, your real estate agent), write them a recommendation. I received one completely out of the blue last week and I still smile thinking about what a treat that was to receive it! All you have to do is click &#8220;recommend this person.&#8221; Do it today!</p>

<p>When you comment on someone&#8217;s blog post, why not also add what was particularly great about the piece as well?</p>
<p>Subscribe to the blogs you want to read regularly. Show the blog owner/writers that you appreciate their work that way. Socially share blog posts that you love on all of your other social sites.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t forget to assign credit to everyone that you reference in your blog posts. I like to &#8220;litter&#8221; my posts with all sorts of outgoing links to offer my readers more information as well as give credit to those who contribute to the development of a blog post.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">If you&#8217;re planning a social media campaign, how important is it to integrate bloggers before and during the campaign? I&#8217;m referring to social media campaigns launched on a platform(s) <em>other than </em>a blog platform.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #000000;">People join causes because they know and trust either the organization itself, or someone associated with the cause. Translating this to our virtual lives, outside bloggers have the reach and trust to be that friend that recruits others to a cause or a campaign. I know this from my community organizing days: friends bring friends into a a cause or a campaign. The strongest advocates become the best recruiters. </span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Bloggers not only have reach within their community, but they amplify their reach through social bookmarking (Digg, StumpleUpon, etc), re-tweets, and of course leveraging their personal twitter networks. Also, bloggers tell compelling stories. From John Haydon: &#8220;Bloggers can have the biggest impact in online campaigns by telling a sincere, heartfelt story. They can also have a big impact by knowing who among their readers would also stand up and take action for particular causes.&#8221; During social media campaigns, bloggers are the grease that can push a campaign forward, help it gain momentum, and bring needed attention and value when it is faltering.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong><span style="color: #ff6600;">Opportunity International Australia</span><span style="color: #ff6600;">: Micro Finance Trust Fund Camapaign</span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">As an Australian ambassador for Opportunity International, <a id="aptureLink_7ZaG83IhmV" href="http://twitter.com/wonderwebby">Jasmin Tragas</a> pledged to raise $10,000 to create a micro finance trust fund for female entrepreneurs in the Philippines. She created an online fundraising campaign, and blogger relations was integral to iy.  As part of the campaign, Jasmin <a id="aptureLink_clWkDkZbYE" href="http://awomansinvestment.blogspot.com/2009/04/ebook-about-some-amazing-worldshapers.html">created an eBook</a> about female world shapers entitled &#8220;<a id="aptureLink_kBoIG3yx0V" href="http://awomansinvestment.blogspot.com/2009/05/worldshapers-ebook-for-you.html">WorldShapers: Extraordinary Women Making a Difference</a>.&#8221; Many of the women featured in the book <a id="aptureLink_8srSBuqbC9" href="../2009/06/12/changing-the-world-one-ebook-at-a-time/">wrote blog posts</a> about the cause and championed the campaign. (Disclosure: I was one of the women featured in the eBook.) When I asked Jasmin to describe the role of bloggers in the campaign, she replied, &#8220;huge in terms of getting visibility. Not just bloggers writing about the campaign but also sharing in fun blog challenges. This raised the profile and brand. Blogging may not have helped right away but that it increased visibility over time. I was describing it to friends earlier today as a trickle effect.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong><span style="color: #ff6600;">Visible Government: Beers for Canada</span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Beers for Canada was a social media campaign run by <a href="http://visiblegovernment.ca/" target="_blank">Visible Government</a> to fund software to monitor government transparency. According to an <a id="aptureLink_c61SrUGL08" href="http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2009/07/alistair-croll-guest-post-using-twitter-for-fundraising-lessons-learned-from-beers-for-canada.html">interview with Alistair Croll on Beth&#8217;s Blog,</a> the organizers pre-seeded the 3-day campaign by identifying and speaking with key bloggers and twitterers, who brought their voices to the campaign. Incredibly popular and respected bloggers (Tim O&#8217;Reily, Om Malik. Tara Hunt) also tweeted about the campaign.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong><span style="color: #ff6600;">Epic Change: Tweetsgiving 2008</span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Epic Change&#8217;s <a id="aptureLink_HhP0w7UsUx" href="http://tweetsgiving.epicchange.org/story/">Tweetsgiving  2008</a> event was extremely successful in terms of the amount of tweets, publicity and funds raised to build a school in Tanzania. In Avi Kaplan&#8217;s <a id="aptureLink_heVGrTIGmI" href="http://meshugavi.com/2008/12/how-do-you-measure-gratitude-a-tweetsgiving-wrap-up">Tweetgiving analysis</a>, he writes that the campaign pre-seeded the event with a few bloggers, but not many. The blogger mentions began to roll in as the campaign gained momentum, resulting in over 100 press and blogger mentions. <a id="aptureLink_AUx6to7tzv" href="http://meshugavi.com/2008/12/the-story-beyond-the-stats-in-tweetsgiving">Deeper analysis</a> revealed that 15% of the visits to the donation/Epic Change Tweetsgiving site came from blog posts and articles. Avi writes: &#8220;the press we received was so valuable to <a href="http://epicchange.org/" target="_blank">Epic Change</a> and continues to benefit the organization, but in terms of raw traffic, it looks like word of mouth and twitter mentions were the main drivers.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong>Epic Change: Tweetsgiving 2009</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This year&#8217;s <a id="aptureLink_sC5uFiihMK" href="http://tweetsgiving.epicchange.org/join-us/">Tweetsgiving 2009</a> social media campaign (November 24 &#8211; 26) embraced and integrated bloggers. The Tweetsgiving website encourages participants to self-organize into groups; the &#8220;Blogger&#8217;s Group&#8221; is one of them. Organizers also pre-seeded the campaign by asking influencers within certain online communities to bring their own &#8220;flock of Turkeys&#8221; (my wording, not theirs) to the event, essentially turning these influencers into recruiters and campaign leaders. (Disclosure: I am a member of this group, called Wild Turkeys &#8211; their wording, not mine.) <a id="aptureLink_itKNsC6EB8" href="http://twitter.com/johnhaydon">John Haydon</a> (one of the campaign leaders) told me that &#8220;for Tweetsgiving, the main role bloggers have is encouraging their communities to participate.&#8221;</p>

<p>There seems to be a favorite type of blog post addressed to the new social media user: &#8220;What To Do On&#8230; (name of social media network).&#8221; Along with blog posts, there are FAQs on almost every forum, listserv, and social network. Why do we need these posts? Each <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Participatory_Media" target="_blank">participatory media </a>has its own culture and cultural norms. Part of the beauty of participatory media is that the participants actually <em>want you to participate</em> and <em>reap the benefits</em> of participation.</p>
<p>The culture of each social media network is entirely different. I would never write a blog comment with the same informality with which I&#8217;d write on a Facebook Wall. Not even to the same person. A Facebook friend always starts his updates with &#8220;&#8230;has just updated his professional blog. Check it out!&#8221; He acts similarly on Twitter. He doesn&#8217;t know that participatory media means&#8230;participating and not advertising.  A little bit of cultural orientation would probably increase his business three-fold.</p>
<p>Non-profits often make the same mistakes as people. Many smaller non-profits that I work with are just beginning to dive into social media, but are intimidated by the cultures.  They want to engage meaningfully, but don&#8217;t know how to start.</p>
<p>I want you to create meaningful conversations with your stakeholders.  I have compiled a list of etiquette and cultural orientation advice about using each of the  major social media networks and tools on the web.</p>

<p>I had coffee today with a friend of mine who spoke to me about his early work experiences. As a young lawyer, he was mentored by one a law partner who told him that &#8220;sometimes it doesn&#8217;t matter who takes credit for the work.&#8221; In today&#8217;s society, we want to be recognized for our hard work. However, in the new age of social media, it&#8217;s about working together to find solutions, and giving credit where credit is due.</p>
<p>It struck me that organizing is the same, and there are lessons for social network engagement as well. As an organizer, you should &#8220;never get in the photo, never speak for the group, and never take credit.&#8221; Why is this? Because a professional, outside organizer is NOT a member of the group being organized. He/she is the facilitator, coach, guide and supporter. The real work is done by leaders and members of the group. When one of the community groups I worked with won an important victory against the City&#8217;s garbage services, I was contacted by a member of the press. I told her that I would only speak as an anonymous background source, and gave her names of group members to contact for direct quotations. I was not in the news photo shot, nor mentioned in the paper. Naturally, my egotistical self wanted to say &#8220;hey&#8211; I supported them! I knocked on doors to recruit members! I advised the campaign!&#8221; The reality is that if I had taken credit, it wouldn&#8217;t have been the truth. The real members did the hard work. They put their names, reputation and energy out to the world. They also were the backbone of the organization.  If I had taken credit, that would have usurped the role of the organization&#8217;s leaders, minimalized their hard work and discredited the organization.</p>
<p>What does this have to do with social networking? Two things. First, as I&#8217;ve mentioned before, true engagement means dynamic, respectful conversation. If members of your online community forum discuss better ways to implement your program, and you make those implementation changes, then give them the credit. They thought of it. If I receive blog comments on this post that convince me that I&#8217;m absolutely wrong about this credo, then I&#8217;ll acknowledge this publicly. If I were to revise this post based on changes suggested by my readers without giving credit, then I&#8217;d actually be stealing ideas and ultimately diminishing my credibility with you, my readers.  A great example of dropping one&#8217;s ego at the keyboard is within the stream of comments generated by <a href="http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2008/08/11/understanding-gartners-generation-virtual/">this blog post of Jeremiah Owyang</a>. After Owyang posted about Gartner&#8217;s Generation Virtual research, there were 33 comments. Throughout the comment stream, he acknowledged valuable contributors to the discussion, and later revised his blog post based on comments received.</p>
<p>Secondly, the more people contributing, the better your organization will be. The idea of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wisdom_of_Crowds">&#8220;the wisdom of crowds&#8221; by James Suroweicki </a>argues that the aggregate wisdom of the crowds most often results in answers more accurate than one single person can create. The more people share ideas and contribute, the stronger and better defined the idea will become. The idea of wikis works just this way, and a great example is <a href="http://www.wearemedia.org/About+Project+Background">NTEN&#8217;s We Are Media Project</a> . This project creates curricula for non-profits around social media. It includes some of the most interesting thinkers on social media and noon-profit today, and they are all contributing their &#8220;proprietary&#8221; ideas to create free information. My best estimate is that about 25 people are active on this wiki and about 50 more participate. And they&#8217;re GIVING IT AWAY. Why? Because they know that openness in collaboration can result in a much better product, or ideas, than any individual would create on his/her own. Google docs and other shareware are great tools to facilitate sharing ideas in document creation, and wikis do the same online. Openness during collaboration, and the interest in collaboration are two ways of checking your ego at the keyboard because others are doing the hard work as well. The rewards can be mind-boggling.
