Great post, Debra. I agree that first and foremost Facebook is a social media site. Yet, a main feature of such sites and networks is that they are viral in nature. If anyone in your network does something (in this case makes a donation), other people will see it and possibly follow. Social media is about interacting and engaging with just about anything, including donating. Users might not join Facebook to make donations, but while they are there, it is a great forum to promote your cause. If your friends do it, you might too-this is the crux of social media.

debra,

enjoyed reading it. i can only speak for jewish causes, and particularly israel related ones. (but i think this will be true for any cause)...if you want to raise money via facebook, you have to target people who are your supporters to begin with, and have them solicit their family and friends.

it is no different than any other fundraising campaign. if aunt sally sees you gave $50 to cause 'x', then she might give her $100. but to expect a college student with 1000 friends to drum up cash support is, generally speaking, unrealistic....

my two agorot...

Debra- Great summary of the status and challenges of Causes on Facebook. I agree with you - nonprofits should embrace Causes now as an additional engagement tool. Donations will likely come as the expectations of users change in this medium, but for now the extra level of engagement is a goal in and of itself.

Do you have any tips for setting up the Network for Good dashboard you mentioned in the post?

I look forward to your blog post about the great NTEN session on Facebook Causes!
